Chegaste muito cedo and the translation is “you’re very early.”. I thought chegaste was the definite past tense of chegar so should the translation be “you were very early”?
Yes, chegaste is the past tense of chegar 🙂 A sentence like this, “Chegaste muito cedo”, could be used when talking to someone who has just arrived earlier than expected. In English, the most idiomatic translation in that context is “you’re very early”, even though the most literal would start with “you were”. There isn’t always a perfect match between English and Portuguese tenses; that’s the case here.

É mais complicado do que isso! Não é o futuro do conjuntivo, mas sim o infinitivo pessoal. Para verbos regulares, é muito difícil distinguir entre os dois tempos, porque as conjugações são iguais. Só os verbos irregulares é que têm conjugações diferentes no infinitivo pessoal. Mais informação aqui: Impersonal vs Personal Infinitive
Obrigado, Joseph. Claro que não é tão facil. E óbvio que o infinitivo pessoal usa-se frequentemente. Ele emprega-se não apenas nas frases de algum tipo de estado como: “é facil”, “é bom”, “é necessário” etc. + inf pessoal. Mas encontro-o também nas muitas frases preposicionais, por exemplo, “sem sabermos falar português” (without [us/our] speaking Portuguese), ou “apesar de fazerem barulho” (despite [them/their] making noise), ou “para vivermos em Portugal” ([in order] for us to live in Portugal). E é já aqui onde fiquei confuso. Não tinha percebido que o infinitivo pessoal emprega-se com aqueles advérbios de tempo como “antes de”, “depois de”, ou mesmo “até”, como nesta frase: “até voltarmos” (until we get back/return).
Ainda há um monte a aprender, disso tenho a certeza!

De nada! É verdade, o infinitivo pessoal é usado em todos esses casos que descreveste. Depois de aprendermos a reconhecê-lo, percebemos bem o quão presente está na língua portuguesa 🙂
For time adverbs of amanhã, hoje and ontem, are you able to place them at the beginning or end of a sentence? Such as “Hoje eu vou à praia” vs “Eu vou à praia hoje”? Any preference on where the time adverb should go?
Usually, they’re mobile, yes, at least in simple sentences like the one you gave. “Hoje eu vou à praia” = “Eu vou à praia hoje” = “Eu vou hoje à praia” = Eu hoje vou à praia”. Any of these is absolutely fine; any preference would be personal 🙂
I have two sentences in my smart review from the lessons in this unit that have got stuck because one has an extra “do” in it that I don’t understand.
Ele está atrasado, vai chegar mais tarde que o habitual
O espetáculo começou mais tarde do que o desejado
Is the “do” optional, or is there some subtlety of meaning that I’m missing? My English translations are essentially identical (“than usual” and “than desired”), and although I can introduce temporal complexity (“is usual” and “was desired”), I don’t think that that is important.
Any illumination would be gratefully received.
Olá! Indeed, “do” is optional here. This means that “…do que” and “…que” are interchangeable, so each sentence would be correct either way:
– O espetáculo começou mais tarde do que o desejado = O espetáculo começou mais tarde que o desejado
– Ele está atrasado, vai chegar mais tarde que o habitual = Ele está atrasado, vai chegar mais tarde do que o habitual
In cases like this, we tend to switch things up here and there to expose you to the different possibilities.
