Time for a Portuguese vocabulary boost! This Unit will focus on objects/things from many different categories.
Most of these words will be new, but some you may have already picked up. To test yourself, cover up the right side and see how many of these objects you can name. You’ll hear how to pronounce each word in the Lessons to follow.

I previously learned ‘máquina de fotográfica’ for camera. Does that refer to a dedicated “old fashioned” camera and ‘câmara’ is anything with camera capabilities, like the tiny one on a cell phone?
Is a ‘máquina de café’ interchangeable with ‘caféteira’? From photos, it looks like maybe caféteira can refer to a single-pot brewer or just a pitcher for coffee, whereas the máquina can be more complex like a Nespresso or espresso machine.
“Máquina fotográfica” (without the preposition) is a dedicated camera, yes. As the name suggests, they are especially (or exclusively) suitable for photography. For video, you might need a “máquina de filmar” or “câmara de vídeo”. “Câmara” per se is what you said – it’s a broad term.
As for “máquina de café” and “cafeteira”, they are sometimes used interchangeably in reference to a coffee machine, but generally speaking, the terms are used as you described 🙂
Are the words above in Brazilian portuguese ? I just learned that Duo Lingo is Brazilian Portuguese and I am now at lesson 13 😏. We are going to Portugal in April ….

The content on Practice Portuguese is focused on European Portuguese, not Brazilian Portuguese! While there are some differences between the two, many of the basics are the same, and a strong foundation in one can certainly help with understanding the other. But if you really want to focus on European Portuguese alone, just stick with us! 🙂
