• Olá, bom dia!
  i really enjoyed this video (as I do all of them), but Joel’s last comment about changing the order of the lessons, was perfect. I’ve been doing that and jumped to the animals lesson (only because I love animals), but at the same time was wondering if I really needed that. I am retired so my “conversations” are mainly at the grocery store, the bank, the mercado, the farmacia or when I have to call an agency (exhausting because it is so hard over the phone!), like the electric company. I’ve also been trying hard to text in Portuguese, to my Portuguese friend who does not speak English.

  I have a question. I am a bit confuse about the “you”. My first language is Spanish and as in Portuguese, we have formal and informal. As you know, not in English. If I am telling someone younger than me. “are you going to the park”?. Is it Vais o parque or tu vais o parque? The tu and você are very confusing to me.

  • Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the video and lessons! I think it’s ok to spend time on the animals unit in your case (even if it’s not the most relevant) because it sounds like it’s enjoyable and motivating to you. You love animals, so maybe they will end up coming up in conversation more than you think!

    I just wanted to link you to some other units that might be useful too:

    Informal vs Formal You (Tu vs Você)
    — Spend some time with the Learning Note in this unit. It’s a complicated topic, but it goes over when to use tu vs. the different forms of você. As for the question you asked about – you can say tu vais or just vais (the pronoun “tu” is optional).
